Mild non-proliferative retinopathy: Early microaneurysms (tiny bulges blood vessels).
Moderate non-proliferative retinopathy: Damage progresses, with hard exudates forming in the retina.
Proliferative retinopathy: Fragile new blood vessels grow, which leads to bleeding, retinal detachment, or severe vision loss.
